Agatha Christie
Ten strangers from different walks of life receive letters inviting them to Soldier Island. On reaching this isolated rock which was entirely cut off from the mainland, they find their host to be absent. Soon after, each of these people is accused of terrible crimes. As time goes on, one of the party dies…. then another…. and another. Soon enough the stranded strangers realise that this is no mere accident. Amidst them is a slaughterer, and as long as they are on this island the murderer seems to strike repeatedly.
The most sinister thing being, the murderer follows a macabre nursery rhyme about ten soldier men, that is found in each of their rooms on their arrival. There are ten china figures in the middle of the dining table and each time an individual is murdered, one of them eerily vanishes or is found broken. What is the killer's motive? How are these people related to each other? Were they chosen at random? And if there is no one else on the island and all of them gradually keep dying, who is the assassin?
Each character's personality has been portrayed in an absolutely unique manner, each with a sense of mystique. Although there are ten characters in the book, all having a different back story, the book doesn't get chaotic or confusing at any point.
What we absolutely love about the book is that it is extremely gripping and will keep you at the edge of your seat throughout. Each small detail has been put across in a very clean manner. The author has beautifully managed the tricky aspect that ten people had to die without the story becoming ridiculous or the murderer being obvious. The plot is filled with a bunch of plot twists and red herrings, yet, the author leaves no strings untied and each seemingly unimportant accessory plays a significant role in the finale.
The book has earned immense appreciation from people all over the world due to its thrilling storyline.
The entire plot is so clear, straightforward, but baffling, and yet has a perfectly reasonable explanation. Agatha Christie herself admitted that the book took an immense amount of planning and required an epilogue to explain it.
This book which will keep you engaged from start to finish is undoubtedly one of our favourite murder mysteries. Agatha Christie is unquestionably talented and is known for her unexpected endings, something that can evidently be seen in this novel too. Throughout the course of the book, every time you suspect a character to be the killer, you find yourself to be wrong! At no point does the story feel slow and is in fact rather addictive. We do not know of any of our friends or family who have read this book and not liked it, needless to say, it is a timeless classic!
“And Then There Were None” has sold over a million copies and came first in a global vote to find the world’s favourite Agatha Christie book for her 125th birthday. It is now also a major BBC series.
All in all a great read and a book which we would definitely recommend all of you to read. Trust us you will not regret it!
